COHS National Honor Society

About NHS

National Honor Society (NHS) is more than just an honor roll. Each Honor Society chapter establishes rules for membership that are based upon a student's outstanding performance in the areas of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. These criteria for selection form the foundation upon which the organization and its activities are built.

Scholarship is characterized by a commitment to learning. A student is willing to  spend the necessary time to cultivate his/ her mind in the quest for knowledge. This can  only be achieved through diligence and effort. Scholarship means always doing the best work  possible, regardless of impending reward.

Service is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit.

Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life.

Character is demonstrated by those who uphold principles of morality and ethics, are cooperative, demonstrate high standards of honesty and reliability, show courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintain a good and clean lifestyle.

Membership Process at COHS

A list of students in grades 10-12 is generated once a year in the spring semester. A student must meet the following requirements at the time the list is generated in order to receive an invitation to apply for membership

*3.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA)

*Less than 10 absences during the current school year (No distinction is made between excused and unexcused absences)

*Zero discipline referrals for the current year and less than 3 days of ISS for all previous years.

Once the student has been invited to apply, the candidate will then be required to

*Write an essay on a topic chosen each year by the selection committee

*Provide two personal references from non-family members

*Provide a list of school and community activities and service

Candidates are then ranked by the faculty council, on the four traits that this organization is based on - scholarship, service, leadership and character.

**PLEASE NOTE: NOT EVERY STUDENT ELIGIBLE WILL RECEIVE A LETTER OR BE ACCEPTED INTO NHS**

The 5-member faculty selection committee then reviews all of the application materials and teacher evaluations and makes a final invitation to the candidates that will best represent the National Honor Society at Coldspring-Oakhurst High School.

If a candidate is not invited to join NHS in a particular year, they may be invited in future years if they meet the requirements. A failed application does not disqualify a student from future acceptance.

Maintaining Membership in NHS

All National Honor Society members are expected to maintain membership requirements of the National Honor Society, including GPA, and to take part in National Honor Society service projects.

All NHS members are required to volunteer 30 HOURS!
